Then the angel said to me, “Write: ‘Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!’ ” And he added, “These are the true words of God.” At this I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, “Do not do it! I am a fellow servant with you and with your brothers who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! Revelation 19:9-10

Dear Jesus, it’s not hard to understand why John fell down to worship the angel who delivered this magnificent preview of coming attractions. Our oldest longings… greatest cravings… and deepest yearnings will find their fulfillment in the wedding supper of the Lamb. Knowing you is the only resolve to the profound ache we live with every day.
The essence of foolishness is to believe there’s some set of circumstances… some person… some relationship… some change in the world… some sensual experience that can satisfy the restless and out-stretched-reach of our soul. But we’re made for you, Jesus—we’re made to be fulfilled and completed only by you. You are the loving and tender Bridegroom who cherishes a most unlikely and ill-deserving bride. You are the Spouse we always wanted.

Jesus, because we’re called and guaranteed a place at this most glorious banquet… because you’ve set your affection upon us and find great delight in us… because we will spend eternity celebrating the only love that was ever enough, the only love that would never let us go… for these incomparable gifts, we too, fall down and worship you.

Jesus, until that Day… until the Day you consummate your marriage with us, help those of us who are single to find greater fulfillment in you. Well be beyond cliché and spiritual spin, let us discover your love to be better than life. And should we marry or remarry, may it always be clear Who has the first and final claim on our heart.

For those of us who are married, help us to love our spouses as you love us—offering one another very real expressions of your spousal affection for us. Free us from unrealistic expectations of one another… Free us from having no expectations of one another… Free us from thinking you cannot renew broken, boring, passionless, purposeless marriages. In these temporary marriages of ours, bring childlike wonder and grace-full kindness to bear. Write new stories that will bring great glory to yourself. So very Amen, we pray in your name, with grateful and longing hearts.
