Well, there could be some racidity in the carrier oil you use....?

How about diffusing with distilled water? I have a cold diffuser I bought for just that reason, but you want COLD, as opposed to any heating process. That is the most effective way to get the benefits, through the dermis.

Anyway, just a thought.
