Normally, that's correct. With SIBO though, you can have a good deal of inflammation which affects motility. Things slow down. As you get closer to the ileum, the environment becomes colon-like. Overgrowth of aerobic bacteria (lacto's eg.) higher up use up oxygen, leaving the ileum habitable by anaerobic bacteria (bifidus eg.)
