BEACHON – Southern Rocky Mountains
June through August 2010
Woodland Park, CO
This is a request for mobile GAUS measurements at the NCAR BEACHON Manitou Forest Observatory during summer 2010. The purpose is to 1) understand the evolution, especially during the morning and afternoon transitional periods, of boundary layer thermodynamic structures over a forested site, and 2) support regional and process-scale modeling efforts of the newly constructed site, and in so doing improve modeling support for future funded research projects at the site. The mobile GAUS soundings will take place for two episodes in June: a) Wet-episode during soil drying-down following rainfall, and b) dry-episode approximately one-week after major rain events. The sounding will be launched for three consecutive days for each of the above episodes, with increased launching frequency in the mornings and evenings while the atmospheric boundary layer is in transition.

GRIP – Genesis and Rapid Intensification Process
August through October 2010
Florida and California
The NCAR-designed GPS dropwindsonde is proven technology that provides in situ vertical profiles of temperature, humidity, pressure and winds within tropical cyclones and their environment. The instrument has been used successfully on the NASA DC-8 in past field campaigns and the data analyses have been used in numerous publications. Here, the PI proposes to serve as NASA Dropsonde Scientist for the DC-8 and Global Hawk. In the past the PI has served as Dropsonde Scientist during TOGA COARE, CAMEX-3, CAMEX-4 and NAMMA and a Mission Scientist during TCSP and NAMMA. This proposal budgets for installation and rental of the NCAR dropsonde system on the DC-8 and 100 DC-8 dropsondes for NASA GRIP. The proposal assumes NOAA will take the lead in furnishing the dropsonde system and expendables for Global Hawk.

PCAPS – Persistent Cold Air Pool Study
December 2010 through February 2011
Salt Lake City Utah
A three-year research project is proposed to investigate the processes leading to the formation, maintenance and destruction of persistent, multi-day, mid-winter, temperature inversions or cold-air pools that form in the Salt Lake basin (SLB). These persistent inversions occur frequently in the western US and throughout the world and their initiation and breakup are quite difficult to forecast. Air pollution can reach unacceptably high levels in persistent inversions in urban basins, and the breakup can carry pollution vertically to produce regional-scale air pollution and climate impacts. Because of poor mixing, fog and stratus can build up in the inversion leading to hazardous episodes of persistent freezing rain, drizzle or fog and interfering with ground transportation and aviation. The project will make use of the EOL Integrated Sounding System and the Integrated Surface Flux Facility.
POLCAST3 - Polarimetric Cloud Analysis and Seeding Test 3

Grand Forks, ND
Study to determine if polarimetric radar observations can detect the effect of hygroscopic cloud seeding.
PREDICT – PRE- Depression Investigation of Cloud-systems in the Tropics August thru October 2010
St. Croix, Virgin Islands
The proposed PRE- Depression Investigation of Cloud-systems in the Tropics (PREDICT) is a focused observational field campaign to investigate both the structure and evolution of tropospheric wave-like disturbances in the tropics and sub-tropics and the subsynoptic- and mesoscale processes operating within the waves that contribute to the formation of tropical depressions. This new field project aims to test the following hypothesis as part of the “marsupial paradigm” of tropical cyclone formation. The project involves the NSF/NCAR GV and dropsondes.

WAMO – Western Airborne Mercury Observations
October 2010
Mather, CA
Mercury bioaccumulation is a problem of national significance, however, there are large uncertainties in our understanding of the sources and atmospheric cycle. In this project we propose to develop, evaluate, and utilize an airborne instrument to measure two of the most important chemical forms of mercury: gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) and reactive gaseous mercury (RGM). While several groups, including ours, have previously measured GEM from an airborne platform, very few have measured RGM by aircraft and none have reported airborne RGM measurements with high time resolution. Our instrumentation will provide a duplicate quantification of RGM; one with one-hour resolution and a second with 2.5-minute resolution. This will allow us to compare data from the two techniques and assess the uncertainty of the RGM measurements. This will be the first time that high time resolution observations of both GEM and RGM have been carried out by aircraft. With this capability, we will be able to address a number of key scientific questions on the atmospheric mercury cycle.
