Hiatal hernias will generally create a "catching" feeling at the base of the sternum when harder objects are swallowed such as tough steak or pills.  Some chiropractors can put these back in.  Here is an old post on hiatal hernias:

If it is H. pylori the second option is licorice root, which kills H.pylori and also helps to build up the adrenals.  I recommend boiling the root for 15 to 20 minutes in water to make a tea that he can drink throughout the day.
