The fact that other forums have worse instances of bad behavior and abuse does not excuse abuse in this or any other forums. I guess it depends on where you draw the line. No doubt, I draw the line a bit higher than others - but I simply do not think you can have spirited and forceful debate without having to resort to name calling, redicule or belittlement. Such things might be considered fun for some folks, but I consider them unneccessary and potentially harmful. As I said, this is supposed to be a place of healing and I don't see running another person down as being healing in any way. If you disagree, then we will have to agree to disagree.
To repeat what I posted earlier in another debate forum:
When it comes to contentious debate, my so-called wise words have come from experience. In earlier times here, I had more of a tendency to take things more personally than I should have - and still have to guard against the tendency to jump in too heatedly and too longly, sometimes more successfully than others. I am reminded of the old Longfellow poem: The Arrow and the Song I shot an arrow into the air, - Henry Wadsworth Longfellow I've slung my share of arrows here in days gone by and wish now that I had many of them back.
It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For, so swiftly it flew, the sight
Could not follow it in its flight.
I breathed a song into the air,
It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For who has sight so keen and strong,
That it can follow the flight of song?
Long, long afterward, in an oak
I found the arrow, still unbroke;
And the song, from beginning to end,
I found again in the heart of a friend.
