In many ways, Joyce Shaffer is the quintessential country singer.

She grew up as the ninth child of a dirt poor sharecropper, then married young and raised her children amid tremendous hardship.

Nevertheless, Shaffer found joy in the beauty of the rugged Colorado landscape which has been her lifelong home. During the 1980s, Shaffer enjoyed singing with a band.

Now she's beginning a new work: writing and performing her own songs but, instead of singing about her own heartaches, Shaffer is singing an anthem for American voters.

This August, the 61-year-old grandmother and rancher will perform in Washington, D.C., warning the establishment that tea partiers and other Americans, in fear of what Barack Obama will do, are "Takin' Back Our Country."

"Obama is the worst thing that ever happened to this country," said Shaffer. "And I will say it openly because if I won't say it openly, I can't expect anyone else to say it."

On Youtube, reactions to "Takin' Back Our Country" range from "Great song Joyce! I was singing right along with you. United We Stand!" all the way down the scale to "Nice song, you stupid white trash retard. Your hatred is showing... please die in a hole, you old bag."

No matter what people say, Shaffer is upbeat. She sings for everyone who "earned their wrinkles" and strives to raise a new generation that fights for our rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

In the 1950s, Shaffer's father committed suicide during economic distress, but her mother taught the family to prevail. Therefore, Shaffer sings for millions of Americans who are afraid of losing everything during the current economic crisis and government takeovers of businesses, health care, and private property.

In other words, Joyce Shaffer isn't a coal miner's daughter. She actually worked in a coal mine and now she's singing like a canary to save her country.

"My only son, Jeff Stevens, served in Desert Storm and, thank God, he came home to us in one piece," she said. Likewise, Shaffer's husband, Danny, also is a former Marine and the couple raises horses on their Colorado ranch.

Shaffer said, "We have seven Marines or former Marines in our family and one in the Air Force. We love this country and we defend it.

"It all starts with us as individuals," said Shaffer. "I think we're in the fight for our life right now. I think that if we lose this fight, we lose our country.

"Colorado is fed up," she said. "Of course I'm on the western side of Colorado, but I see a lot of people standing up. It's no longer about Democrats and Republicans. It's about us standing together as Americans because we will all grow together or we will sink together. And I really hope that the majority will say, 'Let's grow together.'"

Shaffer doesn't read music and explains her songs just "come" to her when she least expects it. She believes that they're a gift from God.

Ken Dravis of Aspen Leaf Recording Studio in Grand Junction agrees and has invested in getting Shaffer's message out to all Americans. In fact, Dravis is Shaffer's music producer, background singer and a guitar player – as well as her video producer, director and camera man.

Other contributing Colorado artists include Randy Utterback on electric guitar and fiddle, and drummer Pat Olson.

In the "Takin' Back Our Country" video, members of the group Restore Our Colorado and the Mesa County 2nd Amendment Task Force wave signs saying "Restore Our Constitution" as Shaffer sings:

Transparency means 'let us see,' keep us informed
What the heck you're doin' behind those closed doors
Quickly rights are stolen when folks are lulled to sleep
God’s strength is showin' in a country that is free
We're takin' back our country and that's a fact
If it doesn't sound good to you, let us help you pack.

"Since my songs are God-inspired," she said, "I don't have to worry about people liking 'em. He already knows what we need to hear."

That said, Shaffer's latest song and music video is "Hey, Calderon!", a reply to Mexico's president who urged Congress to ban high-powered weapons in the U.S. and stop Arizona from enforcing immigration laws.

Eye Full Productions, makers of the documentary "Southern Exposure," which exposes the cruelty of murderous drug and human traffickers, donated footage to Shaffer's music video. For the sake of all audiences, Shaffer only used nonviolent images.

The full "Southern Exposure" promotion:

While Shaffer welcomes everyone who wants immigrate legally, she takes President Felipe Calderon's message very personally. According to Shaffer, some of her friends in Arizona were run off their property by "a flood" of armed illegal aliens, who took over their land and trashed it. Consequently, these Americans had to leave their home "in hope that the government would gain control of the border."

Shaffer explained that her friends recently returned to their property because the criminal aliens had moved to other areas of Arizona. However, she said that in the wake of a July 1 gunfight between rival drug and human traffickers in Hermosillo, Mexico – a battle that left 21 dead and others wounded merely 12 miles from the Arizona border – again illegal aliens are threatening her friends.

Shaffer has been asked to perform in Phoenix at the "Stand with Arizona" July 30-31 National Immigration Policy Summit featuring state Sen. Russell Pearce, author of the law that reinforces federal immigration standards.

However, the Obama administration challenged the law, scheduled to take effect tomorrow, in court and some portions have been suspended pending a trial. Its ultimate outcome is uncertain.

Referring to her friends, Shaffer said, "These people say 'We can't believe that we're living this way in the United States and our president has the gall to sue us because he won't do his job.' When the president doesn't protect U.S. citizens that's an impeachable offense."

Pre-election momentum is building as stations across the country are playing "Takin' Back Our Country." On August 27, Shaffer will perform at the "Windows to Liberty" American Rhapsody activism rally for restoring the U.S. Constitution in Rockville, Md.

Joyce Shaffer's biggest dream for the summer is to perform at Glenn Beck's Restoring Honor Rally on August 28 in Washington, D.C. Meanwhile, Shaffer’s songs are sold on CD Baby and iTunes.
