Problems arise when people won't get their kidney situation properly assessed/diagnosed, they'll just rely on a standard bunch of herbs prepared in the customary concentrated form that may overtly stress these delicate organs. There aren't major differences among the various kidney tea formulas available. Shelley dealt in natural stuff, and the urine analysis was her only venture into mainstream medicine, mainly to determine the foods that would harm a particular person in a symptomatic stage (low/high in purine, phosphorus, etc.). The combination of rice and beans was generally deemed excellent. She's into kinesiology testing and Ayurveda and the kidney tea she was given as remedy tested negative. Had she taken it she'd have messed badly. She advocated kidney cleansing and Richard Schultze's products and in fact claimed they were gentler than Moritz' tea, which she considered too strong. Yet according to her research not everyone benefits from the same prescription. Among kidney herbs she thought it crucial to make the distinction between the very soothing (marshmallow, corn silk), the mild diuretics (parsley), the strong diuretics (gravel root, hydrangea), the potassium-rich (apple cider vinegar) and so on, valuable information so as to better suit each case. In some cases she advised starting very gently with a kidney treatment, maybe with dandelion tea, or in a particular instance to use a smaller dose of Schultze's products. Consider Moritz tea formula: six strong diuretics, plus marjoram, and only two soothing agents...3 Tbsp. herbs to 2 cups of water... this goes beyond 'medicinal-strenght' to a level other herbalists won't go near...All I know is when I was in pain this particular tea didn't help a bit. A person here told me that to this day they're still unable to withstand the kidney tea for more than three consecutive days due to an underlying, suspected kidney condition, which they expected the tea would take care of. No such luck. At the very least herbal companies should begin formulating these products in various degrees of strength. But I do believe Schultze's products to be the best.
It's likely we're looking at two different scenarios here: silent, small stones and sludge that don't cause much discomfort and may even go undetected, which these herbs will indeed help dissolve, and various stages of kidney disease with impaired renal function on the other hand. At this point and with inflammation present a misguided use of herbs may be further irritating. It's well-known that herbs can have bad side-effects like meds *if improperly used*. Epsom Salts are contraindicated in cases of kidney disease, and magnesium toxicity is often associated with kidney failure. Is it worth it to damage your kidneys for the sake of the liver flush. At times the Liver Flush is pushed as wholly risk-free, and some may even ignore mild kidney discomfort signals. Even leading authors seem to have a blind spot for potential dangers in natural healing, take but these two examples from Andreas Moritz book: he devotes several paragraphs to denounce the harmful effects of toxic preservative sodium benzoate in a chapter dealing with sodas, of which sodium benzoate is an ingredient, yet when discussing Aloe Vera juice fails to acknowledge that sodium benzoate is present in virtually every aloe product out there. He also heavily criticizes medications that make you so vulnerable to sunlight as to make it hazardous to the skin, yet not once mention that herbal antidepressant St. John's Wort has the very same effect on a paragraph dealing with that very herb ...It's double standards sometimes in the natural healing world... Of course his advice on kidney cleanses is the rather casual "even if you don't know if you have stones, cleanse the kidneys anyway, oh, and do it twice a year" (a walk in the park, no less) --to which I'd reply: how can you tell when the job is done and they are finally 'clean' ? As we've seen not every kidney problem is linked to obstruction.
