Scientific thinking is not static, there are no absolute truths, just what we know, based on the evidence at the time. The fact that many alternative practices have not been examined scientifically does not mean they are not effective, it just means they have not been tested. Science allows for thinking to be wrong, belief systems based on faith do not. Science allows for change when more evidence is found, faith based belief systems do not.
Science puts forward a theory, and the evidence to support that theory, but most importantly science, and real scientists, accept when a theory is proved wrong.
Science in its true form is for the open mind, faith based belief systems are for those who have closed their minds to any other possibilities.
