The blood flow bit seems right, don't know about the rest... Nothing seems to wake my brain up as instantly as some good ol' curls w/ heavyass dumbbells (about 30% body weight each hand, simultaneously, and 30-40 reps seems to be the magic number to get both cardiovascular and hormonal effects, but without beating the hell out of your arms)!
