When doing a post mortem examination, the liver is always examined, particularly if a person dies suddenly with no history of illness. Samples are taken and micro-examined. All pathologies are noted. I have rarely seen liver stones , and the ones I have seen have been very small, at the most pea sized, not golf ball sized. They are usually in the liver tissue itself, not in the ducts. There are certain diseases that can cause liver stones , and as the article you posted says, these stones are small and friable, (meaning they break up easily), but these diseases are not common in western societies, I wont comment on how prevelant these diseases are in Asian societies, because I have not researched this.

Gall stones are much more common in western societies.

I have no idea whether MD's look for liver stones in their patients, they certainly look for the pressence of Gallstones if the symptoms suggest it. I've been tested myself for gallstones, but my symptoms were not from gallstones, and I didn't have any show up in the testing.
