This ties in with what I said in my earlier post about the stones may not be the common cholesterol based stones we see more in the West. These are bilirubin stones, also known as "pigment stones".
One cause of this are certain infections, which can explain this. Although there are hereditary forms of the condition as well, which could also explain why it is more common in specific groups like this.
