Two things:
First thing: I live so far north in the US that in winter my Vit D falls to a great big 4! That's right 4. It is impossible to get enough sun light on your skin when it is 30 below zero. I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but I am not and will not get out and expose myself in late fall/winter/early spring to try and get the needed Vit. D. I also can tell you, as a victim of low Vit.D, that low Vit. D levels really suck. I feel horrible, have depression (SAD?), get sick, etc. and am basically non-functional.
Second thing: I don't care what the various studies for or against Vit. D say. I have found, even in warm, sunny weather, that if exposed to undesirable pathogens (i.e. flu, etc.) and if I start getting the telltale signs of sore throat, tiredness, etc. that are the prelude to getting very sick, that bumping my Vit. D. intake to 50,000 units a day for 1-3 days and the pathogen is history and my immune system is up to snuff. So, maybe it is the pathogen's immune system that is brought low, because my immune system clearly improves.
The way I look at supplements, vitamins, foods, is to listen to my body. Trust me, if my body doesn't like something I put into my mouth, it lets me know in one big fat hurray with a You fed me WHAT?!!! And my response is, I'm sorry, I'll never do it again, I PROMISE!!! When it comes to Vit. D2, my body could care less. When it comes to Vit. D 3, my body says, more please! just like it does with iodine, or don't you believe in iodine either?
