I just finished reading dr. Mark Starr's book on Hypothyroidism type 2, and he makes a compelling case that a great number of our population are hypothyroid(40% or more), especially if you have a family history of it, and even more so if your mother has it, or likely had it. I know my mother has dealt with significant hypothyroid issues since college, and now in her late 50s has enlarged thyroid and hashimoto's(I've put her on Iodine and her thyroid is shrinking in size). If the mother has thyroid issues while she is pregnant then the child's thyroid will not develop optimally, and will almost always become hypothyroid. In the book he lists a lot of clinical research done by dr. broda barnes who conducted for a good part of his life the most extensive clinical thyroid research to date.
He also recommends Iodine and dr brownsteins book, amongst others, but also makes it clear that he feels desiccated thyroid hormone supplementation will be needed to achieve optimal health for these hypothyroid people, in addition to supplementing Iodine and other things.
He also talks about how dr broda barnes found that testing your basal body temperature (body temperature taken right when awaken in the morning) is the best, as the TSH thyroid blood test just don't work very well in detecting type 2 hypothyroidism as he calls it, which is what most people with thyroid issues have. To take your basal body temperature use a non digital thermometer and test it in one of your arm pits upon first awakening for around 10 minutes - a normal basal temperature will be one degree lower than normal day temperature, so 97.6, if you have below this by over half a degree you are likely hypothyroid.
Anyway i was a full degree lower, and this is after taking supplements for many years and high doses of iodine for over a year, so I'm starting on the desiccated thyroid to see if it will improve my lingering symptoms of hypothyroidism.
Anyone else read the book or tried desiccated thyroid?
