Cisco, I've always thought that feeling you need to be armed to protect yourself, actually makes you more of a victim. In order for this to be an effective strategy, a person would have to carry the weapon with them all the time, and the weapon would need to be loaded. Apart from the inconvienience of carrying a heavy gun around, there is, for me, the unacceptable danger that this weapon could find its way into the hands of a child, or be stolen and used against someone else.

Most stranger assaults are not planned affairs, they are usually very quick, with little time to think about taking out a weapon, assuming there is one at hand, loading it etc. Training such as Grz suggested, to train the mind to remain calm in a crisis situation, is IMO the best weapon that anyone can have.

With home invasions and robberies, the victim does not usually have time to access a weapon, load a weapon, and be calm enough to judge whether to use the weapon. I hear lots of people saying things like, " I would shoot anyone who attacked me or my family", but faced with an extreme situation, there is no way of knowing how a person would react, unless they have trained for these situations. This training is not something you can learn in a few days, weeks or even months of lessons.

My Mum had a saying, "act like a doormat and people will wipe their feet on you", I think this is also applicable to this thread, if you act like a victim, you will attract predators. Clutching a gun in a handbag to you, as you go about your daily business, screams fearful person and potential victim.
