I don't think #119588 meant that it is a folly to attempt to defend oneself. I think #119588 meant that physical training will not be effective in helping a woman fend off a male attacker.

Physical training against a knife or gun is for entertainment and movies, not reality. Training on how to ESCAPE after being kidnapped or bound/gagged and put in a trunk is VICTIM MENTALITY and a false sense of security with fairytale wishes. You are giving yourself up to the whims of a criminal attacker and letting him make the decisions about how the situation will end up. A person with a gun is much much less likely to even make it to the "trunk stage" and god knows what else the attacker has in mind after that.

There are disturbing opinions here that such limitations and fault should be placed on the victim - many of you are in effect saying that the victim can't be responsible with a gun, the victim should try little tricks to overcome a huge disparity of force, the victim should rely on the government or police to protect her, that she isn't competent so the weapon will be used against her, and she should structure a huge amount of time and large part of life around training for something like she is a slave at the mercy and whim of a criminal act that might or might not happen. The good guys should not structure their lives around the whims of criminals. You all are letting the criminals dictate how society is run. The victims are blamed and the attackers become the victims.

There is also an immediate assumption by some of you here that self defense guns are used without training or assessing the situation, and that people carry a gun for selfish reasons such as ego. This is far from the truth and the only source of such dire misinformation that I can think of is that this idea comes from movies and tv. Many of the people around you in every day life carry concealed guns and you would never know it. The assumption that all guns are used irresponsibly is attaching blame to the gun without respect to the gun owner.

And please give me some examples of when you said "all too often the defender is injured by the attacker with their own weapon". All too often? With a gun? Again you are giving the power and benefit of the doubt to the attacker and disarming the victim. A gun is much less likely to be taken away from a victim, compared to anything else that victim could be trying to defend herself with.
