My friend was just diagnosed with Lupus. Why can't allergy shots cure autoimmune diseases? I googled it and came up with these:
I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I think they are going to just trade one issue for another.
Also I do not see this as a cure, but rather a masking just like allergy shots for allergies. Allergy shots do not cure the allergies any more than the immune suppressants they use to control allergies, and autoimmune conditions for that matter. If we think about it in order to cure the problem we must prevent the production of the autoantibodies in the first place. Otherwise it is like saying dialysis is a cure for kidney failure since it helps remove the symptoms. Obviously it is not a cure.
But the biggest problem is that a lot of these researchers do not seem to understand the concept of low affinity (nonspecific) antibodies. In the full article from your first link they mention antibody specificity and refer to "tissue-specific factors". The problem is that not all antibodies are tissue or antigen specific. When making monoclonal antibodies an antigen test strip is added to blood serum for the antibodies to attach to. But all these antibodies are not all specific, but they need the specific antibodies to make the monoclonals. So they need to separate the high affinity (specific) antibodies from the low affinity (nonspecific) antibodies. This is done by adding the antigen test target to gradually stronger sodium sulfate solutions, which strip off the low affinity antibodies leaving behind the high affinity antibodies that are used to make the monoclonals. So we know that all antibodies are not target specific. In fact this is the same problem we run in to with antibody testing. For example the HIV antibody test has over 65 known causes for false positives. Most of these false positives are caused from a problem known as serological cross reactivity. Basically this means that the nonspecific antibodies are cross reacting on the antigen test targets leading to the false positives. This again should tell the researchers that not all antibodies are target specific as we are taught in medicine. The reason all the above is important is because the antibodies in autoimmune conditions are not specific, but rather nonspecific low affinity antibodies. These antibodies cannot differentiate between the microbial antigens to linked to most autoimmune conditions and the healthy tissues of the body due to similar markers on both. If they ever want to cure autoimmune conditions rather than just cover up their symptoms then they are going to have to understand this concept.
As for my first comment about trading one problem for another this goes back to the fact that most autoimmune conditions have been linked to various pathogens. The antibodies that are being produced are supposed to target these pathogens, which to an extent they do. If they start targeting these antibodies for destruction by the immune system then the antibodies will not be available to target the pathogens triggering the autoimmune condition. Therefore these pathogens will be free to roam the body leading to other problems such as cancer. This really is not much different that current conventional thinking which is to suppress the immune system with drugs like Prednisone and methotrexate to the point that the patient cannot mount an immune response at all. But again this is not a cure but it does leave the patient vulnerable to the pathogen causing the autoimmunity and other pathogens as well.
Even if by some miracle they did manage to get this to work in humans without causing secondary diseases they would never allow it on the market if it were a real cure. Autoimmunity is big business just like cancer. With all the billions of dollars spent on cancer research each year there has never been any single major advancement in cancer cures come to the market even though cures have existed over 100 years. On the flip side it has been found that cancer cures have been blocked from getting to the market and researches banned from working or getting research grants when they came up with promising cancer cures by a major cancer research hospital and the largest non-profit cancer agency in the US. I won't name names but the information is out there. This is why I get so upset when I see all these people being duped in to giving to this cancer charity or running for the cure, etc.
It is like the saying goes........ "I hope they come up with a cancer cure soon, I am tired of running 10Ks".
