You may check out the Iodine Supplementation forum, it usually has many people's experiences with the differing forms of iodine/iodide.
You'll hear/read about the various considerations for Iodine supplementation from source to dose. Some people claim that Kelp or natural sources of Iodine are the best, while others prefer to supplement with elemental forms such as Potassium Iodide (KI) or Nascent Iodine, just to name a few. The dosages also vary cause not everyone's body is the same and people's reactions differ. Some prefer that you get some type of test to check your iodine status. Usually, you will take a dose of iodine and a test will reveal how much you excrete. Depending on your excretion, it determines if you are iodine sufficient or not. The two channels I'm aware of are saliva and urine. I haven't done the tests due to the fact that I know I did not get adequate iodine from my diet.
Personally, I alternate between what I mentioned above... the KI and Nascent Iodine daily. One day I will take a drop of SSKI (saturated solution of potassium iodide), then alternate with the Nascent Iodine the next day on an empty stomach upon waking.
According to Trapper, the one that makes his own SSKI , one drop is roughly 30mg of iodide. According to my Nascent source, it is a 2% solution suspended in grain alcohol that roughly provides 400mcg of iodine in each drop. Some people take more, some take less, it depends on their interpretation of what is best for their own bodies. I feel that my own body likes my personalized dosing, even though I could technically take much more than that.
When I weigh the good vs bad of iodine/iodide supplementation, the good outweighs the bad, especially since the element plays a big role in our immune system, not just the thyroid.
Another equally important aspect of supplementation is the availability of co-nutrients to help absorption. Selenium is a big one, found in high amounts in Brazil Nuts. The natural forms of selenium found in the nut absorb the best comparatively to supplementation.
Researching this may take a long time, just make sure you take more than iodine/iodide to reap the benefits. Some people take extra salt to prevent reactions, but I take low doses comparatively and experience increased energy, feel slightly more hydraded, and improved memory. However, I did have some side-effects where I had a little more headaches than usual and too much energy at first.
Which brand do you have now? Liqui-Kelp from World Organics?
The labeling of the supplement is weird, it states KI, but then states iodine of 150mcg.
I wouldn't throw it away, just call the company and ask for a clarification if it's iodine or iodide.
