I would be curious to know what you find, if there is a connection on the Mirena and thyroid. I had a Mirena inserted a year ago, and have since then developed all the symptoms described. I have been prone to seasonal depression, but now started having regular panic and anxiety attacks, terrible mood swings, fatigue.  And I'm a runner and normally very active person, so this was hard to deal with.  So I went on the anti-depressants. Luckily my doctor was looking at my B12 and vitamin D levels.  My thyroid levels were still in normal range, but my B12 and D levels low. It wasn't until a few weeks ago, she suggested we get a thyroid ultrasound, just be sure.

Sure enough, I've been diagnosed with multi-nodular thyroid disease. Actually, this is quite a relief to me, because it helps explain my wild mood swings, anxiety, panics.  But the thing is now I'm wondering if there is a connection between the Mirena and onset of thyroid problems. Thyroid disease is hereditary and I never took the warnings seriously, but wondering if I might have created by not being aware of the thyroid issues and getting a Mirena. Or did the Mirena cause the thyroid issues?  (Which came first? the chicken or the egg?). Nevertheless, after reading many of these posts, I'm going to get my IUD Mirena removed as soon as possible. And start treatment on the thyroid nodules that have developed. Which includes a biopsy of one very large nodule.

So my advice would be this: Even if your T3, T4, TSH levels appear "normal", have them check out your B12 and Vitamin D levels. And then insist on getting a thyroid ultrasound.  It was the only way they discovered mine.
