Hi. I'm a 28 year old male and I've been borderline hypothyroid all last year whenever I got my lab tests done for TSH, T3, and T4. I had about four thyroid tests spread over 2009 and my TSH always ranged 4.2 - 4.9, and my T3 was always borderline low. I also once had it checked for antibodies for Hashimoto's and it came back negative. My first doctor prescribed me Synthroid which I took for about three months (I don't remember the dosage right now, I was really new to hypothyroidism and wasn't well educated), but my next test didn't show a remarkable improvement in TSH. My mom has a history of hypothyroidism and she told me to avoid Synthroid and take Armour instead. Well, I stopped Synthroid in September and just decided to forego all meds. Then I read on Amazon and elsewhere online about people who were able to fix their thyroids (raise their body temperatures, sleep better, etc) by taking an Iodine solution called Lugol's. Well, without any further research I ordered Lugol's 2% and took that for about 2 - 3 days back in the end of December.

After 2 - 3 days I woke up in the middle of the night with my head throbbing! I didn't know what was going on, I never experienced anything like that! I stopped all supplements I was taking (just vitamin C, multivatimin, Lugol's) and thought that it would go away. It didn't. After a week, I checked my blood pressure and was shocked to find that it read 145/95!!! I NEVER had high blood pressure in my life! Never! Repeat, never! So, not really knowing what else to do, I just thought that I needed to exercise to detoxify my body. Well, I put up with this for a month, and the throbbing was preventing me from getting good sleep. My regular sleeping habits were now bursts of 2 hours sleep interrupted by my body waking up. Sometimes I could go back to sleep despite the BP, sometimes I couldn't.

I got really worried and read up on detoxification online and read about water fasting. This was the last week of January. I decided to carry out a Water Fast for 4 days to see what would happen. I had to take time off of work to do this, so I couldn't do a longer fast. Also, I used tap water run through a Brita filter (I didn't know better at the time). Well, after 4 days, my blood pressure went up to 170/110! I got really worried! I came home from work after I used up my paid time off and had 170/110! But then the strange thing is after I had dinner, my BP came down to 135/85.

I told my new doctor (switched insurance) about my high blood pressure, and she ordered lab and urine tests. My metabolic tests came back fine, my T3 was borderline low, my Iodine levels in urine came back borderline low, but my TSH was now 2.8!! She also checked the antibodies for Hashimoto's and they came back negative.

After a few days after the fast, my body seemed to be calming down slowly, gradually. My blood pressure was never higher than 135/85 and it would often be lower, but never anywhere near 120/75. I was starting to sleep a little better, and there was a day when I was able to sleep 8 hours with only one interruption of waking. So I felt that I could resume Iodine therapy (no companion supps, I didn't know at the time). This time I took it slow and did only two drops a day. After a week of this, my BP came back to 150/95. I was so disappointed. And now I was getting insomnia again because of the throbbing in my body.

Again, I forewent all supplements and tried to get my body to heal again by itself. It took about two weeks for my body to get back to a consistent BP reading of 130/80. Once it managed to get to 125/78.

I used to check my basal temperature all throughout this time and it always indicated hypo, usually I'd wake up with 96.6. So I knew my thyroid was not optimal, but I didn't know why I had high blood pressure, since from what I read hypo gives you low blood pressure (and again, before trying to fix my thyroid I never in my life had blood pressure problems). So doing more research on the internet I came across this forum and read about "bromide detox" and thought maybe that's what was happening to me. After all, so many people on the Internet took Lugol's without getting high BP, and I had negative Hashimoto's results twice, and I don't think I had any symptoms of iodine allergy.

After reading this forum, I learned about companion supplements and about therapeutic iodine dosages, and protocols. My BP was usually 130/80 for over two weeks, so I assumed that I had stirred up toxins in my body (after all, my BP went to 170/110 when I did a water fast).

Well, I bit the bullet, bought l-selenomethionine, vitamin C, and celtic Sea Salt , and I bought arrowhead spring water. I started off with a dose of 100mg of iodine using Lugol's on Sunday. I split it into 4 doses, so ten drops in the morning, followed by 100 mcg selenium, 1000mg vitamin C, followed by 1/4 - 1/2 tsp Celtic Sea Salt using the Sherman flush method with Arrowhead water, and I repeated this three times that day. Sunday night/Monday morning I woke up and checked my BP and it went up to 148/98. But then I went and did two salt flushes spaced a half hour apart and remarkably the BP went down to 132/82! This is what convinced me I had detox. But I decided to do pulsing because I didn't wanted to be sure that I could keep my BP down. Monday I didn't take any iodine, and I did a couple of salt flushes that day and my BP during bed time was 128/80. Great news! However, I noticed that my feet were a little colder than usual, but nothing to dramatic.

Tuesday I did the supps again, 10 drops of 2% Lugols' in the morning, followed by breakfast half hour later with 200mcg selenium, followed an hour later with 1000 mg Vitamin C, followed an hour later with one salt flush. Then I waited an hour and did this at work again, the same dosages. Then midday, then in the evening. So I got 100mg of iodine, 800 mcg of selenium, and 4g of Vitamin C that day. I also did a couple more salt flushes in the evening. However, I noticed that my feet were getting colder, and now my hands were getting colder. My blood pressure was now 140/85. But my body was really cold. I went to bed in socks and my feet still felt chilly. I did a couple more salt flushes and went back to bed to see if that would warm me up somehow, but it didn't.

I went to get some extra virgin coconut oil and took a tablespoon of it. I took extra virgin coconut oil before without any negative effects, but no real noticeable benefits. However, after taking it last night, within 10 - 20 minutes in bed, I felt my body WARM UP, and I mean euphoric "this feels good" warm up!! I fell asleep around 11:00. I woke up at 12:30 with my body extremely calm and warm and with a full bladder from the salt flushes. I checked my BP immediately and it read 120/73!!! I was amazed!! I didn't know what did it, maybe the coconut oil. But sadly, after I woke up, my BP went up too and it hovered between 135/85 - 140/90. Also, my feet and hands started to feel REALLY cold again.

Today I woke up and my blood pressure reading stayed between 135/85 and 140/90. I checked my temperature orally, (after waking up at 12:30, I fell asleep around 4:30 and woke up at 6:30) at 6:30 and it was 98.1 F. I decided to ease up on the iodine dose today. I took 10 drops of Lugol's at 6:30, waited an hour had breakfast with 200 mcg selenium and 200 mg magnesium citrate supps, came back and retested my oral temp and it was 95.1!!

I'm very scared now. Did I screw up my thyroid? I've never been this cold in my feet before. Right now I'm wearing winter socks and my feet still feel chilly. My hands don't feel so bad though, but they did this morning. Is this detox? Why did I feel so warm and why did my BP drop to such a comfortable level last night? I slept so well during that time only for it to rise back up again and my feet and hands getting cold. Is this bromide detox, or are these adrenal issues that I need to work on first? After all, I haven't slept well in the past four months. I'm going to do another ten drops of Lugol's tonight and if my body temperature doesn't improve, I'm going to bail like a coward. Please if someone has gone through this, let me know so that I can feel a little more confident with iodine therapy. I'm sorry for the long post, but I'm very worried and I would like to present as much details as I can for someone to give me a clue as to what was going on. I'm still unsure why the coconut oil worked for me last night to bring me back to optimum health for only 1 - 2 hours.
