Actually I should not have been surprised that it had that affect on me. As a protestant we don't focus on His death IMO as much as lets say a catholic may. We focus more on His life and His resurrection life than his death.

We do not see an image of Him hanging on a crucifix on a regular day to day basis as a reminder of that death. Our cross depicts the victory Christ had over death by not showing Him still there.

Even though focusing on His victory is ever so important, I do believe it also important to remember His death as well.

How much love that temple of His held for us. Watching it being beaten and torn and then raised up on a cross.

All the while asking the Father to forgive them, for they do not know what they do....and that is exactly what the Father did. He forgave those people. Even while they were murdering our God....our Savior. The Father forgave them.

It is finished. Christ made a way for all to come unto Him.

Two men were crucified next to Him. One still mocked because his heart was so hardened that he could not see God in the flesh hanging there right beside him.

The other said remember me when you come into your kingdom. He knew that he deserved punishment for his sins. He recognized Jesus not just as a mere man who was falsely accused but someone who had a heavenly kingdom....was royalty....was God.

Luke 23: 39One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: "Aren't you the Christ? Save yourself and us!"

40But the other criminal rebuked him. "Don't you fear God," he said, "since you are under the same sentence? 41We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong."

42Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.[f]"

43Jesus answered him, "I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise."
