I'm in Tacoma. I'll put the field trip in the back of my mind.
As you know it is nice and damp up here. Had a friend who is married to a Japanese lady and he would often go mushroom picking somewhere in the area looking for shiitakes. There are other mushroom pickers in the region too, but shiitakes are a Japanese favorite. He also fished for squid during the winter months from a pier here in Tacoma - as do many Asians even though he's as Western as I am. It's a night time endeavor and you shine a light onto the water and the squid come in looking for spawning grounds, attracted by the light. I never got many, but I do love 'em and just about anything else that comes out of saltwater up here - that's why I have no problem with the taste of iodine. The guy is obviously very well trained.
