Taking into account the length of time these books have been available,(and the lack of other reading material), these sales figures are hardly surprising. If you value a book because of its popularity, I think we are going to see Harry Potter as the next jesus figure over the next few decades. Or perhaps the Lord of the Rings as the next blueprint for life, (I do know people who already use this book as such), both these books are extremely popular :)
