Some alternative practices, those with self proclaimed gurus, and questionable Science or evidence, are very much like belief systems, much the same as mainstream medicine has its gurus and gods, (doctors), and expects that people to have faith in drug companies with very questionable track records, falsified data, and evangelical advertising, and doctors or scientists with equally dodgy credentials.

I personally prefer to take responsibility for my own health, do my own research, know how my body works, and how to fix anything that goes wrong. I know personally that mainstream doctors and pharmacuticals could not help, and were in fact detremental, so I looked elsewhere. I have been helped significantly by mineral/essential element/herbal supplements, I have changed my diet and lifestyle, and I am healthier now than ever before in my life.

If you close your mind to alternatives, without investigation, you take the chance of never gaining any new knowledge, outside of your limited ,and limiting, belief system. Whether that belief system is alternative medicine or mainstream medicine.
