I have read the bible several times, including the greek and hebrew versions.
I don't personally believe that the bible is anything but an elaborate fiction.
What I'm refering to when I say that the bible portrays god as a tryranical, abusive parent, refers to the many verses in the bible that are all about fearing god, doing what god demands, or else. There are many, many verses that portray this version of god, too many to list, but as you read the bible, I'm sure you can look it up for yourself.
The story you are refering to is about a human father, not god. Nowhere in this parable is it mentioned that god is welcoming the prodigal son. If you want to look at it as an analogy, and put god in the place of the father, the father welcomes the son back to his home, even after he has disobeyed. Is that saying that as long as you come back to god, you can do whatever you like in the mean time, and you will be forgiven? Thats all very nice, so why bother doing all this worshiping and work for a god who will welcome back those that don't? (the other son was the one who did just what his father said, and look what happened to him).
Wonder what would happen to the prodigal if he didn't come back??? Thats when we see what god's all about.
The new testement is merely the watered down version of god from the old testement. The view of god is less in your face, as the angry old man, but its still there.
