Your absolutly right Hunter, you don't have to believe in the bible to believe in god, but then it is not the christian god that you believe in, and you are not a christian.

There are many people who believe in a god, but are not christians.

If you claim that you are a christian, then you must believe in the bible, because this is where christianity comes from, it didn't exist before this book.

If on the other hand you read the bible and look at this book as just another source of information, you may well take what you like from it, but this also means that you are not a christian.

And you are right , you don't have to be a christian if you don't want to. In this forum though there are those that are defending the christian belief system, and claim to be christians, these are the people that apply the christian belief system to themselves, but do not like it when someone points out exactly what they are claiming to believe in.
