The christian doctrine is about threats by an angry god. It is literally "love god or else." If you don't love "him" you either are tormented for eternity or the newer, kinder story where you are just snuffed out of existence because the "loving" entity found in the bible only wants people who adore him. Low self esteem for a creator don't you think?
