Chris,

This is the first time I have had time to check back with you. I have been at the hospital for about a week with Ny. She was just discharged last night. She is doing better, but she is still very weak and trying to recover. EMT had to pick her up. She had chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, nausea and the vomiting. EMT said her oxygen was at 60%. They immediately gave her oxygen and got an IV started. She was admitted to the hospital within 2 hours of arrival. It took 13 bags of the extra large bags of IV fluids before she released one drop of urine, which took about 2 days. Her potassium levels were dangerously low, so she was put on potassium therapy for 4 days. They gave her Finnegran (sp?) to help with the nausea and something else (can't remember the name) to address the GI bleed and further protect her stomach from ulcers. Her esophagus was very bruised and tissues were damaged, so they gave her something to coat it to prevent further damage and give some comfort. The doctors were very concerned because she was still vomiting with the IV fluids for about 2 days. They couldn't understand why the nausea medication wasn't helping. Her vision was/is blurry. She was/is seeing double and she had a very bad case of dizziness (really it was motion sickness), which the Drs initially thought was related directly to the dehydration, but it wasn't. They brought in a cardiac specialist and finally a neurologist because her vision was getting worse and worse and she developed Diplopia and found that it wasn't muscle related. The neurologist determined that she had developed a Thiamine deficiency, which was causing an impairment in the brain. Thank God her MRI of the brain showed that the damage was temporary and could be corrected with Thiamine therapy and they immediately began that. Ny suffered quite a bit and was in very bad shape when she entered the hospital. However, she is doing much better now. Although, the doctor's say it will be about a month before she gets her vision back. In the meantime she is unable to walk unassisted or lay down on her back.

Thanks for your help and concern. I appreciate it and she said to tell you thank you as well.

Happy Holidays
