I have bicarb as an unresolved question too. Some people do advocate a teaspoon of bicarb disolved in a glass of water first thing in the morning, well before breakfast. I guess at this time of day the stomach doesn't need to be very acidic, so maybe the alkalinity reaches the small intestine which is meant to be alkaline. I did try this for a few days and did get significant die-off.

I have often wondered if taking bicarb between meals might not stimulate stomach acid creation, so that more is available at mealtimes. I know that taking Betaine HCL with meals tends to downregulate the production of stomach acid, so logically wouldn't bicarb upregulate it?

This is a bit out there, but what if one took several glasses of bicarb (1 tsp per glass) first thing each morning, at least a couple of hours before breakfast. Might not this kill lots of yeast in the small bowel (bicarb is very effective yeast killer) and also stimulate the stomach to create more acid for when it's needed. I admit to not being quite desperate enough to try this just now, but I really think this might work.

A bonus would be all the supposed health benefits of an alkaline body.
