I am so glad to find this forum as after reading posts by all of you ladies I feel less alone. Some background on me.
I always had very normal like clock work periods. When I was 19 I had an accidental pregnancy. I had shied away from hormonal BC prior to this because I was afraid of the hormones. This was no longer an option for me. I started on the BC pill. Was miserable gained some weight in the first year and had no interest in sex what so ever. It was definitely effective as far as BC on that note.
Deciding that I needed less hormones I considered the copper IUD. I made an appointment at Planned parenthood but was talked into the Mirena since they didn't recommend the copper IUD because of the long periods and cramping. I explained my problems with hormones and was assured that mirena is such a small amount of hormone and that it only effects the womb. I went with it.
I continued to gain weight. I went from 125-130lbs to 185. Since the initial weight gain was from the pill at the time I didn't really think about how much i was gaining on Mirena.I would say about 2 or 3 years into mirena is when I noticed the hair growth on my chin. we are talking gnarly crazy spiky chin hair that I had no choice but to tweeze away. I was able to get by doing this for quite some time. However over time it got worse. I asked my doctor for a scriipt for vaniqa to try to help with it. This seemed a fix for a while. Over time it got even worse to the point to where now its out of control.
I was never certain that it was mirena that did it. Everything else seemed to be great and I was one of the lucky ones ( or so i was naive to think at the time) who longer got periods as a side effect.
5 years in and I switched out for another. I'm 2.5 years into my second mirena. So its been almost 7.5 years of usage.
Over the past several years my already fine hair had started to get finer and fall out. For the longest time my husband told me i was paranoid but even now he cant deny how thin it is.
Two years ago the cystic Acne began on my back. Ive always had a degree of Acne but never cystic or body acne. It was so bad I went to the dermatologist earlier this year for accutane.
I was also put on Spironolactone by my diabetes ( type 1 juvenile auto immune type not 2) endo to help combat the hair growth and hair loss. ( androgen blocker).
I went to see a specialist on PCOS and LOCAH as it was suggested that maybe because I am on insulin its stimulating my ovaries to produce androgens like in PCOS.
Did you know that ever single person I have asked has poo pooed me when i asked if mirena could be causing my imbalance?
They told me that I don't have PCOS but a variant caused by my insulin that I have to inject. They couldnt even put me on the PCOS camp I recieved no official diagnosis! Plan of action lose weight and go on a low carb diet.
That's all fine and dandy and I need to do it anyway but it didn't explain my symptoms or why everything began after I was on the mirena. I have been diabetic since i was 16 years old and like i said before regular periods normal hair growth etc etc.
Mirena sparked this rebellion in my body. Oh i do not have poly-cystic ovaries however i do have what my doctor referred to as a normal amount of cysts. I have since found out mirena causes cysts among all the other nice symptoms I am having.
So here I am freaking out thinking I may have some version of PCOS, and that I may not be able to get pregnant when I start trying. Now I am again wondering if its the stupid IUD.
Thanks for reading and sorry its so long and jumbled/
