Sorry -- realized I didn't address the symptoms of reflux: firstly the heartburn -- like a cross of fire across my breastbone, aching pain into the left side of my back and shoulder. 24/7 no matter what I ate. Started out as sharp pains around my heart when I breathed, then became pain on both sides of my chest, then burning. Reflux: came with the burning. My throat felt like it was closing constantly, but especially after I ate. I could taste acid in the back of my throat, and when I opened my mouth in the mirror the back of my throat was a deep red. Lots of burping and sometimes the burping would bring up food with acid. I started having earaches and the feeling that I was getting a sinus infection. I later read that ear and sinus infections are side-effects of reflux --- when you sleep the acid can migrate up the esophagus to damage the ears and nasal passages. Nausea was the worst in this period -- everything I ate felt like it was burning in my stomach, and would create lots of burping and gas. My voice got very hoarse and I constantly felt like there was a lump of phlegm in my throat. Things that helped: Chamomile tea, Ginger tea, Licorice tablets, using a sinus rinse (neti pot) every night, naturopathinc ear drops before bed(ingredients are olive oil and garlic, I smelled like a salad!) sleeping on an incline.
