Get your own metal pick and scaler from a department store and learn how to do it yourself.  I use my scaler and pick every month or two, and I have far less damage to my teeth and gums than when a dental assistant does it.  I too get the white tartar build up on the inner bottom front teeth and I touch these up every week or so.  No sense in letting tartar build up for 6 months to a year and pay a dentist for something that we should be doing ourselves.  By the way get the metal tip scaler/pick - the plastic tips don't offer the control that you need to remove the tartar without damaging the gums and teeth.
