Mouseclick,
The links I provided illustrating a decline in the nutrient values of our food over the last 100 years would, I have thought, been proof enough.
I don't believe there is one single study/report that is more prominent than any other, but here is just one reported by the "Journal of the American College of Nutrition"...........

2004. The Journal of the American College of Nutrition examined food composition changes from 1950 to 1999 recorded in the USDA food composition tables. Forty-three crops were examined showing statistically reliable declines for 6 nutrients. The declines were observed in protein, calcium, phosphorous, iron, riboflavin and ascorbic acid; 6% in the case of protein and 38% for riboflavin.

And another from "pubmed" which I referred to in my original post............

Thomas D. A study on the mineral depletion of the foods available to us as a nation over the period 1940 to 1991. Nutr Health 2003;17(2):85−115........................

and another.........
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18309763?ordinalpos=1&itool=EntrezSystem2....

Here are some other examples where the numbers refer to the Science from the url below.
.........
"Content of minerals and certain other nutrients (for example, vitamin C and phytonutrients) tends to be lower in conventional crops.20,21 Plants extract a wide range of minerals from the soil but artificial fertilisers replace only a few principal minerals.22 Between 1940 and 1991, some fruits and vegetables have lost 60%, 75% or even more of certain minerals.23, 24"

"Many doctors and nutritionists believe that the decline in dietary nutrients is partly responsible for the increase in common ailments such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, osteoporosis, diabetes and obesity.25"
http://www.sgr.org.uk/GenEng/letter_MSP_Organic_Targets_02feb03.htm

AND...
The alarming fact is that foods – fruits, vegetables and grains – now being raised on millions of acres of land that no longer contains enough of certain needed nutrients, are starving us -- no matter how much we eat of them............

For those in the know, the jury is in regarding the nutritional decline in food values over the last 50 to 100 years, and where this goes back to my original point that quality supplementation is an absolute MUST in the prevention of disease and achieving optimum health.
