Varicose Veins

Varicose vein is medically defined as: "A tortuous, dilated vein with incompetent valves." Mosby's Medical Dictionary, 3rd edition, pg. 1225

The word or term "varicose" means: "(of a vein) exhibiting varicosis, or a varicosity; abnormally and permanently distended, such as the bulging veins in some individuals." Mosby's supra.

"Varicosis" is medically defined as: "A common condition characterized by one or more tortuous, abnormally dilated, or varicose veins, usually in the legs or lower trunk, occurring between 30 and 60 years of age." Mosby's supra.

Varicose veins are the result of POOR CIRCULATION! They are more common in women than men.

The veins of the body are like the arteries, however, the veins have little valves on their inner walls to prevent the blood from flowing backward, toward the arteries. You see, the blood in the arteries flow downward and the blood in the veins flow upward. It's like a highway with two lanes for traffic flowing in two different directions, traffic going east and west or north and south. Again, blood in the arteries flow down in the body and blood in the veins flow upward.

If the valves are impaired, then blood circulation is impaired and blood accumulates in the veins, stretching them, and hence – VARICOSE VEINS!

Varicose veins are unsightly. They are dark greenish or somewhat bluish in color, bulging, enlarged, and lumpy in nature.

Varicose veins are undoubtedly caused by insalubrious diet and lifestyle and common in people who are sedentary (people who spend much time seated and who engage in little to no exercise). They are also common in people who sit with their legs cross which is also insalubrious as sitting with one's legs crossed impairs circulation.

Lack of exercise causes the circulation to become impaired, especially when you consider a person's diet, one consisting of much meat (dead animal flesh), dairy products (liquidized cow snot/pus), and refined grains and starches that in turn produces arterial plaque and mucoidal debris – obstruants of blood circulation which impair the circulation of the veins and arteries and leads to a plethora of diseases and disorders.

Varicose veins can also result from being obese, from excess heavy lifting of things, constipation, phlebitis (inflammation of the veins), and can sometimes develop as the result of pregnancy.

Healing From Varicose Veins Naturally

As I always advise, change your diet. A raw foods/vegan diet is best! The more raw foods in the diet, the better! You would be wise to give up meat, dairy products, refined grains and starches, and commercially processed so-called foods. Try mock vegan or meatless substitutes, dairy-free substitutes, whole grains, etc.

Drink plenty of good drinking water (distilled or alkaline, Alkaline Water is best). Drink plenty of vegetable juice daily (fruit juice too!). To learn more about dietary changes, read our articles on "What is Raw Foods", "Alkaline Water", "What Is Meat?" and "Dangerous Dairy."

Herbs are great for the healing of all disease. Herbs themselves do not do the healing. They only assist the body in healing itself. Good herbs that help heal varicose veins include herbs that improve circulation, i.e. Cayenne Pepper (Capsicum), Cinnamon, Ginger and Butcher's Broom; herbs that are deobstruant in nature, i.e. Manjistha, Bayberry, and Goldenseal, and herbs that are astringent in nature, i.e. Witch Hazel Bark and White Oak Bark.

Other helpful herbs for the healing of varicose veins include Horse Chestnut (by far the best herb available for the healing of varicose veins), Wood Betony, Gotu Kola, Horsetail, Yunnan Toucha, Gingko Biloba, and Prickly Ash Bark to name a few.

Horse Chestnut strengthens and tones the veins as it is a venous astringent.

Dherbs.Com products that can help in healing from varicose veins include: Full Body Detox (which is the first thing a person should take), Veins Formula, Circul-Aid Formula, Cardio-Vascular Formula, Blood & Lymphatic Formula, and our Veins Tonic Oil.

I also recommend you keep your colon cleansed and good Dherbs.Com formulas for the colon include Bowel Mover, Colon Formula, Sen-Fen Formula, and Intestinal Janitor (fiber/bulking agent).

Good essential oils that have therapeutic value for varicose veins include Cajeput and Yarrow. Fist apply carrier oil (i.e. olive, coconut, sweet almond, grape seed, jojoba, or avocado) and then add a few drops of essential oil to your hands and massage into the legs and then stroke the veins upward and downward which helps to move the flow of blood in the arteries and veins. This technique can be done for about 5-10 minutes, daily or 3-5 times per week.

Don't forget to be mobile and to exercise. Movement gets the blood circulating and you need good circulation. Whether you work out at the gym, walk, jog, swim, or perform stretching/yoga, pilates, tai chi, or qi chong, simply MOVE YOUR BODY!

Though no physical movement is involved, antigravity exercise is greatly beneficial for healing varicose veins as well as poor blood circulation as this exercise (done for at least 15 minutes per day) causes gravity to work on your behalf by pulling all liquids downward to your head as well as pulling prolapsed organs (i.e. uterus) back into place. With antigravity exercise, your feet are higher than your head allowing circulation to travel downward. You can use a slant board or simply prop your legs up on a sofa or couch or a wall.

Varicose veins can be healed, just like everything else, especially if you believe and have faith in natural healing.
