Hi,
I know that there are very different opinions about the positive and negative sides of milk but I'd like to talk specifically about milk protein intolerance.
So, I've been a heavy milk drinker for the most of my life but soon after I started drinking these protein shakes (whey and casein) I started to get hives, became sleepy and had digestive difficulties. My family told me that I could not drink much milk when I was a child simply because I would get severely constipated. Right now, I'm trying to eliminate milk completely so I'm not eating any dairy products, just mostly chicken and rice along with some fruits and vegetables (simple diet because almost everything has milk in it where I live).
It took almost two weeks but by then I was feeling much better and I would not get these kicks in my abdomen any more no matter what I ate (milk free of course). I could drink sodas with no problem. This diet is still ongoing but I was wondering if this would be classified as milk protein allergy?
Please look at this link to read about the difference between milk allergy, milk protein intolerance and milk intolerance http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milk_allergyhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milk_al...
I'm a little confused by the text myself, since there seem to be 3 different kinds of reactions. There are adverse allergic reactions that produce IgE antibodies and late onset protein intolerances that produce non-IgE antibodies but still cause similar symptoms as the former. Milk intolerance is simply where the body can't break down the lactose (milk sugar) in the milk, but it does not cause allergic reactions. As I said earlier, I suspect I have the late onset protein intolerance.
Ok, what bothers me is that I did go to an allergy doctor and came out clean (blood test and skin prick test). Does that mean I have milk protein intolerance? Is there then no way of measuring antibodies in my blood for it (since it's not IgE)? I'm asking because I want to be sure, since these symptoms settle in so late and I want to show my family exactly what I can and cannot eat. I know that my family tries it's best to cook me something but lately I've been making my own dinner simply because they always fail to read the fine print or are simply positive that something doesn't include milk (and they are usually wrong). Also, I've heard this line a couple of times: ,,A little bit doesn't hurt''.
