Yes, colonics (colon hydrotherapy) is contra-indicated if you have diverticulitis because of the possibility that the pressure could possibly cause one or more of small pouches to burst. This would result in a very serious situation.

If you take enemas, be sure not to hang the bag too high, 18 inches ( a bit less than a half meter) at most. The higher you hang the bag the higher the internal pressure in your colon.

Always lie down when you are having an enema, any comfortable position is fine, but don't try taking one while sitting on the toilet or standing and bending over.

Go slow, letting a little bit in until you start to feel a bit full, then clamp off the flow for 30 seconds to a minute until any discomfort subsides, then release the clamp and allow a few more ounces in.

Don't rush, going slowly allows time for the water to penetrate the folds of the bowels and soften the stool. But above all, be sure not to let yourself become constipated!
