Yeah it is interesting this alkaline/acid debate. I have recently consulted two naturopaths. One emphasized eating/drinking alkaline foods, and even drinking magnesium bicarbonate. The other said how important it is to maintain healthy stomach acid. The stomach acid helps to digest the food, and also triggers the production of pancreatic enzymes and bile, which are necessary for small bowel digestion.

I tend to believe the second explanation. I suspect most yeast overgrowth is caused by inadequate digestion of carbohydrates in the small bowel. This leaves too much food for the yeast and bacteria to feed on, leading to both yeast overgrowth and SIBO.

I did a quick bicarb test for stomach acid and it seems I do in fact have very low stomach acid. This is apparently quite common.
