These are always difficult decisions. I am like Zoe and always try the alternatives first. In your case I would at least get an x-ray to find out what is wrong.
When I go to a MD I always tell them I will call back later and then do my research here on CZ and other places.

My brother who lives in Holland had trouble with his knee but the MD could not tell what was wrong and wanted to do exploratory knee surgery so he asked my opinion.
Told him no way surgery to find out what is wrong,knees are tricky. Did the research for him, I think you can find even info on All forums under meniscus.

I can't remember what I told him but they were supplements I found on CZ and on a Yahoo forum about dogs with knee/leg problems (my dog at that time had his knee popping out).

It is now several years ago and he is back to playing golf and working out and has no problems.

I use BF&C too since I have spinal stenosis plus I keep alined by going to a chiropractor.
