There are meditation cds for kids to help them unwind and get to sleep:

You can try melatonin shortly after dusk. A liquid will help you give the lowest dose needed.

You can also try homeopathic and bach remedies.

I don't see a ingredient list for these combinations, but you can call the company to get a list.

Rescue Sleep: Includes 6 Bach Flower Remedies: Clematis, Impatiens, Rock Rose, Star and Bethlehem, Cherry Plum & White Chestnut. This combination works great when your child have a hard time going to sleep.

You can also try one of the cal/mag powdered drinks. The magnesium is calming. Magnesium oil or Epsom Salts in the bath is relaxing too.

She probably has a hard time winding down and getting ready for sleep. With my daughter, we started the bedtime ritual at 7pm. If she had a very warm, relaxing bath, that would tire her out. I would even lay down with her to help her fall asleep.

Your daughter definitely sounds like a spirited child. Lots of excess energy. Her little mind probably goes a mile a minute too. The meditation tapes can help quiet her mind and the cal/mag powder can help calm her body.

If you can get her to get to sleep earlier, I think you'll notice a big improvement in her behavior. I had a lot of the same issues that you have with your daughter. When my daughter was well rested, she was a lot more agreeable and cooperative, not to mention more pleasant to be around.

Now that she's 12, she's harder to get to bed again. I often have to take her book away to get her to just go to sleep. She'll fight sleep until she gets her second wind. I think I'm going to have to go back to square one with her so she can start getting the sleep she needs.
