here i am, lol! I'm nearsighted and my husband even more so, he's very highly myopic, coke bottle glasses when I met him. I have worked for ophthalmologists for over 20 years (just front office and transcription), but I gather it has to do with the shape of the eyeball (elongated for nearsightedness), but most people develop trouble in mid-life due to accommodation problems - basically the iris gets stiff (or possibly "lazy" as with too much close work). Usually it's near vision that's affected, people have to start wearing reading glasses, holding books out farther, etc., but not sure about distance. Sometimes people who are developing cataracts will get "second sight" for awhile where the cataract actually improves their vision for a short time, not sure why. As someone who cannot function without a pretty strong correction ever since childhood, be glad you went without glasses all these years! What I wouldn't give to be 20/20! My husband knows an alternative optometrist who does some things with natural methods, but he says in case of nearsightedness to the degree we have, anyway, it usually doesn't work. Maybe in your case if it's a mild correction, you may have success, esp. if there is something that helps the accommodation problem - the back and forth at near and distance. Very interesting about the male/female anthropologic connection.
