I think its the wedding that should be banned, not the marriage, they seem to be getting a bit out of control these days with all the fluff and flutter that goes on, not to mention the expense, eeeekkkkk.

My partner bought me a beautiful dobsonian telescope on the 10th anniversary of our first meeting, much better than a wedding, and I have no doubt it will last a lot longer than most marriages :) He thinks that its a great present for his nerdy girlfriend, (and he's correct) and its appreciated much more than a bit of jewelery and a piece of paper.
