This happened to me. I used to advocate it as a way to reduce overacidity. I thought it was great b/c it really made me feel so much better the first few times I used it. Though I got diminishing returns after that, I continued to use it anyway - I wasn't listening to my body. Little did I know that stomach issues I started having, after not having had them for so long, were due to the baking soda. What had happened was that the baking soda had reduced my natural stomach acid so severely, that candida had once again grown out of check because of the lack of stomach acid and had therefore proliferated the gut (again!). It had, as Hver said, turned into the fungal form and the hyphae were poking through the gut lining, making microscopic holes and causing leaky gut. I did realize, because I had such poor digestion now, that my stomach acid was low, so I tried using HCL at that point, but that made me feel awful - acidic and overly toxic all the time. That was due to the HCL leaking out of the gut and into my system. Also, any and all food allergies returned with a vengeance because what was supposed to stay in the gut after consumption and get processed instead ended up leaking into the system, where the body sees it as an unnatural invader, and a hystamine reaction is launched. This is when I realized I was having a bout of leaky gut, so I got some L-glutamine and Aloe juice (and btw, I think Aloe is really the bigger player here, at least for me. L-Glutamine helps for sure, but Aloe seems to be the clincher, at least for me), and used them both between meals and 1st thing in the morning, and by day 3, I was feeling sooooo much better. At the same time, I dropped using baking soda, and began taking ACV in water with meals (just a few sips) to help restore stomach acid. I did not want to take HCL at this time b/c I think it is too harsh for my gut while it is trying to heal - it IS acid after all, and ACV is a much weaker acid. On day 4, I had a big die off session where I was sitting at my computer, then all of a sudden I began to feel nauseated and dizzy. 2 minutes later I was hurling the entire contents of my stomach, and felt exhausted. After 4 hurls, I went to bed, and the next morning, I felt amazing, and my digestion was fine. I think the introduction of ACV to help restore acid, coupled with (and this is KEY) healing the gut (so the acid could stay in where it belongs) is what made all the difference. Another thing I discovered is that anything I took to try and heal candida, whether it was antifungals, vitamins, minerals, or any number of offbeat supplements we all try, were almost USELESS in the face of a leaky gut, b/c stuff needs to digest properly for it to be available for the body to use. And that, in a nutshell, is how I finally began to win the candida war. Oh, and all the feeling bad that went on for months on end? NOT die-off. Rather, it was candida toxins circulating in my system.
