This facial pigmentation (melasma) can have a heredity factor.
Some individuals are more prone to melasma from free radical damage to the skin leading to over production on skin melanin.

Hormones can also play a role in melasma formation. More specifically estrogen, progesterone and melanocyte stimulating hormone (MSH). An example is "mask of pregnancy", which normally develops during pregnancy, but can also occur is the absence of pregnancy. I ran in to a friend of mine from high school about 15 years ago who has the mask of pregnancy, but was unable to get pregnant. She had some ovarian cysts screwing up her hormones. I loaned her a Rife unit that cleared up the cysts after a couple of weeks and she was able to get pregnant.

Birth control pills and progesterone creams are also known for causing melasma.

Melasma is almost exclusively seen in women, but men can develop this condition also for a variety of reasons including excess hormone exposure from meats/dairy, xenoestrogen exposure, diethylstilbestrol (DES) for prostate cancer, certain photosensitizing medications and the use of progesterone creams.

I recommend trying digestive bitters and B vitamins just in case hormones are playing a role in your case.
