place them so that they are pulling each other together but not touching. in between the two is the magnetic field.

are you thoroughly confused? you should be. this is a perfect example of north and south being practically meaningless. if a teacher used this stuff with me i wouldnt be able to find my ass with both hands, two helpers, a guide book and a coach.

the lines of pull always go from positive to negative. now find which way the lines go and place the plus sign and minus sign where they belong. viola! you can get it then. the north pole of the earth is negative. they have the magnet representing the earth marked S at the north. this is because the S pole in this case means south pointing. since the south pole is positive, only a negative pole will be attracted to it. thus, the S on the magnet in this case is the negative pole, just like geomagnetic north.

no wonder kids are dumber than a box of rocks these days with teaching tools like that. positive and negative never change, so that is what i use exclusively.

btw, figure 2 at the first link shows the magnetic field between the magnets. at least they got that part right if not the polarity.
