I know its an icky subject, but I was recently talking to a friend who gets regular colonic irrigation, he is a pathologist that I used to work with in the coroners dept, and he does this irrigation because he has seen the damage done to people by having years of impacted fecal matter in the bowel.

It is more of a problem in our western society because our diet contains little or no incidental grit, such as soil particles and sand, or even quite robust forms of fiber. The problem is also exacerbated by eating a lot of soft processed food, and few whole grains.

Impacted fecal matter can cause ulceration of the bowel, can trigger the formation of cysts and polyps, and in some cases can lead to bowel obstruction.

The good news is that you don't have to pay for expensive colonic irrigation, DE does the job very well. I'm going to see if I can dig up some of the studies that have been done on this, I have read one recently in an Australian medical journal.

Although eating a diet with plenty of roughage is always the best way to go for a clean bowel, DE can also help with this, along with getting rid of parasites.
