If we didn't have to make a conscious effort to chose right over wrong Eve wouldn't have eaten the fruit.

God wouldn't have had to give us the ten commandments to use as a pattern for behavior.

He wouldn't have had to tell us "If you love me, keep my commandments".

2John 1:6 And this is love, that we walk after his commandments, This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.

From the beginning and forever, that's how we love God.
