It's because everything slows down when you are in an accident, that ticking heightened awareness, leastways, every time I have been hit it has been like that. The last time I was rear-ended I actually had the time to put my hand on the back of my neck to lessen the impact of it snapping back after being pushed forward. The chiro said it was split seconds and very weird I should do that, but I have been hit enough times to know what whiplash feels like and instinctively went to protect myself. And it seemed like I had PLENTY of time to do it in, because everything slowed down for me (and I didn't get whiplash, neither).

That car on the wall next to you must have seemed like it was there a lot longer than it actually was, which is probably why you had time to reload. It is perfectly natural for animals to emit loud noises to protect themselves. Who knows, maybe there is a deterrent property to it that does more than just scare away men. Maybe it works on metal, too.
