This next picture is where I meet the baby for the first time.

When we picked the baby up, we were told that she had had a cough which they were giving her medicine for. When we got her back to my son’s house it was about 11:00 at night. The baby was having a difficult time breathing, her lips were blue, she was extremely clammy and her chest was retracting – in fact, I seriously considered taking her to a hospital because I wasn’t sure she was going to make it through the night. We decided to try steaming her to see if that would make a difference, so we boiled some water (my son’s house has running water, but no hot water) and poured it into a tub in the bathroom to create steam. While my son was preparing the sauna, I was undressing the baby and she did something which I considered really remarkable. It would be expected that when you remove a child from the only environment they have ever known, they are going to be upset, especially being as sick as she was. However, instead of being fussy, she was smiling and trying to talk to me. She was acting happy – it was as though she knew me and had been waiting – I was truly amazed. We steamed her really well and used some of the herbal formulas I had brought with me, which seemed to ease her breathing. The next morning she threw up a bunch of mucus and was draining from her nose and ears. We gave her a bath and were all disgusted by how filthy she was – there was literally residue left in the bottom of the tub. When my daughter-in-law contacted the people we had picked her up from and asked why she was so filthy, they said, “No one wanted to clean it up”.
