Turiya, you asked "what's up?" but then you pretty much spelled out the situation as I understand it. Was that just a rhetorical question?

Far as I know, Trafficant was a typical, compromised holder of public office; beholden to powerful figures who generally remain out of the public view. All of the people who rise to that level of office, congress, governor, mayor of big cities, police chiefs, etc, they are all in somebody's back pocket, they are all under somebody's thumb....yes, even Palin who people have recently tried to portray as being pure as the driven snow. These folks all had to bend over on behalf of somebody/something in order to attain their lofty offices. Therefore they are blackmailable should they ever get out of line. Clearly Traffican got out of line, ergo he got into jail. Likewise, judging by the flogging Palin is still taking in the monopoly media long after she should have become a non-conversatoin piece, it seems that somewhere along the line she peed in somebody's cornflakes, and is now paying the price.

Anyway, the main question I still have these years later about Jim is, why did he get out of line? What was his motive? Was it perhaps a momentary lapse? Did he suddenly wake up one day and realize that he was in the club of run of the mill, compromised, bought-and-paid-for public office holders? Look at a similar guy who got spanked around the same era; Dan Rosthankowski. I don't know what he did to get out of line, or why, but he ended getting booted out of office and spending a few years in Club Fed prison, and he got out quickly for his sins. One thing that puzzles me about the way Trafficant went up/out in flames, aside from getting an exceptionally long prison sentence, the message he made on the house floor shortly before being escorted off to prison was the same basic message L.T. McFadden made on the same house floor some 70 years ago. McFadden did not get railroaded into prison. Why? Maybe because back then the monopolized media did not yet have broadcast television for beaming info around the globe in a few seconds.... so maybe back then the shadow considered his message less a threat to them? Anyway, he did not get railroaded into prison. Instead, he got poisoned.
