Can you please elucidate on "safe" sugars?

The first content I look at, on a food product, is the amount of sugar. Then I look to see if it contains HFCS. Then I look at sodium content. etc.

I really like some of the so called nutrition bars; but ...

sugar alcohols (give me gas)
honey (love it)
cane syrup
and others.
